We would like to share 6 verses selected by the first head of the Miyanagi School
from Rikyu’s verses and compiled as ‘Principles of Training’.
This is the first one.
To have the mind to enter this path is, indeed, to have
an inherent teacher.
‘Sono Michi ni Iran to Omou Kokoro koso Waga Mi Nagara no Shisho Narikere.’
A literal translation is…..
In any learning endeavor, one must firstly have the will to learn. Without that, it is like
entering that path and walking it aimlessly, on a continuing journey with no goal.
With Geido, or the refined arts, unless one takes it upon oneself to learn, there will be
no progress. If a person voluntarily wants to learn, already there is a superb teacher
within that person’s mind. This goes not only for Chanoyu. Whether it be scholastics
or other refined arts, when setting upon that path, these words should be savored well.
The moment you decide to start something, the moment you begin searching or
researching, the desire to improve has already begun to sprout. That very desire is like
a teacher, and it becomes the driving force for your progress.
At first, you might feel uneasy, but since you already have a teacher in your heart,
it’s pushing you forward, saying, “Don’t be afraid—take that first step!”
