We would like to share 6 verses selected by the first head of the Miyanagi School
from Rikyu’s verses and compiled as ‘Principles of Training’.
This is the second one.
Practice constitutes learning from one, becoming cognizant of ten,
then returning from ten to one, the beginning.
‘Keiko towa Ichi(1) yori Narai Juu(10) wo Shiri, Juu(10) yori Kaeru Moto no Sono Ichi(1).’
A literal translation is…..
Practice (Keiko) is a matter of orderly progressing from step one to two, three, four, and so on
to step ten, and then returning to the first step and once more orderly progressing to step two,
three, four, five, and so on.
The mind of a person who returns from step ten to the first step and studies step one again
is completely different from when that person studied step one for the first time.
Anyone who thinks they have had eough because they have studied up to step ten will stop
their progress at that point.
Starting from the basics, you work your way through to the end, then when you go back to
the beginning, you start to see things you couldn’t see before. And as you repeat this process, things that didn’t make sense before start to connect, and your world expands. We believe that
there is no end to learning; you grow through repetition.
It’s exciting to think that there are so many views that we still haven’t seen.
