We would like to share 6 verses selected by the first head of the Miyanagi School
from Rikyu’s verses and compiled as ‘Principles of Training’.
This is the third one.
In the learning process, watch and learn; voicing opinions
without having done this is foolishness.
‘Naraitsutsu Mite koso Narae Narawazu ni Yoshi Ashi Iu wa Oroka Narikeri.’
A literal translation is…..
Disliking a food without having tried eating it. To criticize something is easy enough,
but if one actually attempts to do what one is criticizing, one will find it difficult
to accomplish. If one is to be critic, one must personally engage in the object of
that criticism, or else it isn’t sincere criticism. Empty words won’t convince anybody.
There are things you can only understand and see by actually entering that world.
There’s a big difference between seeing and knowing something and actually trying it.
Even if something looks easy, you might not be able to do it when you actually try it.
Criticizing something based on knowledge and thinking you understand it intellectually
isn’t very convincing. If you try it and find that it doesn’t suit you or that you don’t like it,
that’s fine. That’s more convincing.
