Principals of Training #5 ~ One should abandon

We would like to share 6 verses selected by the first head of the Miyanagi School
from Rikyu’s verses and compiled as ‘Principles of Training’.
This is the forth one.

One should abandon feelings of embarrassment and ask people questions; this is the keystone to becoming adept.

‘Haji wo Sute Hito ni Mono Toi Narau Beshi Kore zo Jouzu no Motoi Narikeru.’

A literal translation is…..
There is the old saying, ‘If you don’t know something, don’t be embarrassed to ask someone
who knows’. Rather than feeling embarrassed about being unsure of something, it is better
to ask your teacher (Sensei) or a senior member (Senpai).
While you may think to yourself, ‘I don’t understand this point. Let me ask Sensei about it
next practice session,’ when the time comes and you are about to ask the question, you leave
it be, thinking ‘Maybe people will laugh at me for not understanding such a simple thing.’
Understandably, you may feel embarrassed. But if you let the chance slip by, that point
which you wish to know about will remain unresolved. This is a big loss for you. If, however,
you just endure a moment of embarrassment, you will gain something for life.

You may hesitate to ask others out of modesty or pride. But if you miss the opportunity,
you’ll never know what you wanted to know.
Nowadays, there are many ways to research things,
so you may be able to solve some problems on your own, and it may be necessary to research
and think about it on your own in that way.
However, if you feel you can’t find a solution,
I think the secret to improvement is to be honest and ask for advice, rather than leaving it
as it is. If you approach things with a honest heart at all times, the path will surely open up.
