Principals of Training #7 ~ To become adept

We would like to share 6 verses selected by the first head of the Miyanagi School
from Rikyu’s verses and compiled as ‘Principles of Training’.
This is the sixth, the last one.

To become adept at something requires liking it, agility,
and the accumulation of training. It is the person with
all these three who will certainly realize mastery.

‘Jouzu niwa Suki to Kiyou to Hagemu noto Kono Mittsu Sorou Hito zo Yoku Shiru.’

A literal translation is…..
With anything, to become an adept master at it requires three qualifications.
Firstly, you must like it. Secondly, you must have agility with it. Thirdly, you must put tireless
training into it.
Likes and dislikes are personal matters. Even though you may dislike something at first,
you could come to like it once you become familiar with it. Though you may like something,
for some reason you could come to dislike it. Such chan
ges could occur, but if you are
studying it unenthusiastically just because someone urged you to, or your study is obligatory,
you will never get good at it, just as the old saying goes, ‘Getting good at something depends
upon whether you like it.’
The question of agility has to do with individual, natural talent, and so it may seem as though
that can’t be helped. Here again, however, one should not be discouraged, because,
awkwardness aside, as you come to feel at home with the practice, your manner will reveal
a kind of appealing flavor not seen in the manner of agile people. Insofar as concerns
the refined arts, the accumulation of training is the most important qualification. In anything, impatience will not reap improvement.

When you enjoy something so much that you lose track of time… whether it’s sports, games, lessons, or anything else, you’ll likely improve.
Above all, I think it’s a blessing to find something you can become so absorbed in.

Japanese Dance School MIYA cherishes the spirit of the Miyanagi School, which is
‘Friendly Japanese Dance that anyone can enjoy’.
