Principals of Training #6 ~ `Namaru’ means

We would like to share 6 verses selected by the first head of the Miyanagi School
from Rikyu’s verses and compiled as ‘Principles of Training’.
This is the fifth one.

‘Namaru’ means to do the steps with uneven rhythm,
fast here and show there.

‘Namaru towa Tetsuzuki Hayaku Mata Osoku Tokoro Dokoro no Sorowanu wo Iu.’

A literal translation is…..
‘Namaru’ refers to the quickening or slowing down of the steps, making them uneven.
It is one in which the places you have thoroughly rememberd are done swiftly and smoothly, whereas those which you are still unsure of are done slowly while thinking.

When you’re confident, things flow smoothly, but when you lack confidence, you end up
slowing down as you mentally double-check everything. Conversely, you might deliberately
take your time with tasks you’re good at to draw attention, while rushing through things
you’re not so good at to cover them up… An unnatural flow isn’t particularly appealing.
It may actually be very difficult to do things casually.
It’s important to always keep a relaxed mind and look at the bigger picture.
