Today, we’ll introduce “BUNMEIDO Nihonbashi Main Store” in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.

|History

BUNMEIDO, famous for its castella cake, was founded in Nagasaki Pref. in 1900.

|Open

BUNMEIDO was founded in 1900 in Maruyama-cho, Nagasaki City. Later, the founder’s younger brother, JINZAEMON MIYAZAKI, opened his own business in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Pref. However, Sasebo, which had been rapidly developing as a naval town, began to feel a significant impact on its business and economy due to the Washington Naval Treaty, and it is said that this prompted him to consider expanding to Tokyo. Then, in 1922, they opened their first store in Ueno, which became their base in Tokyo. Around the same time, they also signed a contract with Mitsukoshi, a major department store, and conducted demonstration sales, which were groundbreaking at the time. These events were a huge hit and were fun to watch. The long lines that formed generated further publicity, and the name “BUNMEIDO” quickly spread throughout Tokyo.

|About 1922

The year 1922, when BUNMEIDO expanded into Tokyo, was also the year many companies and media outlets that are now integral to modern Japanese life were founded. SHOGAKUKAN, the publisher behind magazines and comics such as ‘Doraemon’ and ‘Detective Conan’, was established as a publisher of educational magazines, and Glico was founded with the launch of its nutritious caramel candy known for its slogan “300 meters on just one caramel.” In addition, ‘Weekly Asahi’ and ‘Sunday Mainichi’ were launched, pioneering the weekly magazine boom.

*One Glico caramel has 16.5 calories, the exact amount of energy an average person needs to run 300 meters, which inspired their famous ‘Glico Running Man’ sign.

|TOKUSAN GOSAN CASTELLA (Special Gosan-yaki Castella Cake)

BUNMEIDO is famous for its castella cake. Castella is one of the Nanban sweets (Western-style confections) that were brought to Japan by the Portuguese traders and missionaries who began visiting Japan after the introduction of firearms to Tanegashima in Kagoshima Pref. Originally, it was a hard baked confection, but Japanese artisans improved it to have a soft and moist texture. It was served in exclusive restaurant in Nagasaki and was highly valued as a gift for Daimyo(feudal lord) and court nobles in Edo.
“TOKUSAN GOSAN CASTELLA” is the culmination of 100 years of BUNMEIDO’s technology. The egg yolk to egg white weight ratio is 5:3, and the carefully crafted batter, which brings out the best of the ingredients, is baked meticulously by skilled artisans. It’s moist, fluffy, and the texture of the coarse sugar is irresistible.
